I noticed that afterwards i get mild cramps and then they go away but last week when i had sex it was very uncomfortable and slighty painful then after i had sex the cramps lasted a whole day. I got my period as usual yesterday but it's very light alot lighter then normal. my partner and i did use protection and he says i shouldnt be worried. but i am new to the whole sex thing should i be worried?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear Lola: Kudos to you for waiting until age 24 to have intercourse--and for always using a condom! If you have always used a condom it is very unlikely that your discomfort and cramps are related to a pelvic infection from chlamydia or gonorrhea. One of the most common causes of pain in the pelvis is a pelvic infection.

The next most common cause of the type of pelvic pain you have described would be an ovarian cyst. If there is a large cyst on an ovary it can interfere with ovulations--leading to too- light, too-heavy periods, or missed periods. Intercourse can make an ovarian cyst hurt because when the cervix gets bumped during thrusting that will cause the uterus and ovaries to be moved around slightly as well. Initiating sex would not cause an ovarian cyst, but it might make a cyst more apparent.

I would urge you to get a reliable pregnancy test (just for your peace of mind due to the super light period). If the test is negative, and the pain persists, see a GYN or your local family planning clinic for an exam. They can sometimes feel an ovarian cyst during an exam. Cysts can be confirmed with a quick, in office ultrasound. Most cysts resolve on their own within six weeks or so, but if you have pain it should be checked out.

You are asking all the right questions. Hopefully this is a transient issue that was incidental to initiating sex.

Yours,
Jane

Thank very much Jane for answering my questions. Let me tell you waiting is never easy but i'm glad i waited to have sex for as long as i did. As the days went by my period got heavier like they usually are but this time the cramps were almost unbareable. I also passed several clots i guess thats what they'er called i was told that it was the lining of the uterus is that right? they were rather big so i believe it would be wise to see a doctor at this point seeing as how i've never been to a gyno before. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions.
