Long story short--my boyfriend and I got into it about five and a half weeks ago. As far as I can remember, i wasn't on BC that night. He wasn't all the way in, but he was in enough, even though i had underwear on...(as did he), he came, and my underwear got really wet--and it was definetly in contact with my vagina. It sounds stupid, yes. The women in my family are extremely fertile and it only takes one time for us to get pregnant. I didn't think i could get pregnant though because it wasn't full penetration, and I tried not to worry much of it. In the meantime, my period came really late, almost a week and a half I believe--which worried me since it should have come on time obviously. I had light spotting for maybe two days--nothing at all like a period. I have extremely heavy periods, very painful, sometimes bleeding up to ten days without BC to regulate them. And with BC, my periods are still painful and last quite a while. To get to the point, I had finished my pack of pills three weeks ago, and am almost finished with the second week of my new pack. Last night I began having lower back/pelvis pain, and I had a brownish discharge coming out, wasn't blood, but a weird discharge, had some grey in it. I thought it must be my period though, even though it was weird since i wasnt supposed to start for two more weeks. I woke up this morning heavily sweating, with severe cramping, and i felt like i had to throw up. The cramps were so painful i was breathing very heavy and doubled over. I had to sit in one spot for about forty minutes before i could get up and walk. I've had some pretty gnarly pain in my periods in the past, but nothing like this. I went to the bathroom and my underwear was covered in more of the strange discharge, and there was alot dripping into the toilet, some clotting as well. After alot of it came out, the discharge stopped, and the cramping lessened, but it lasted about 3 hrs. The pain now is reduced to a dull ache in my legs, and the discharge stopped for almost 3 hours. It started up again an hour or so ago, with some blood now also and a bit of grey in it. For about 4 weeks before this I felt very off, and unusually drained and exhausted--sleeping sometimes twelve hours and then taking naps in the day because I felt so tired. Also could not eat meat for some reason--seafood also. Which is unusual, that never bothers me. Barbeque smell made me sick and I couldnt eat it. I craved tons of dairy, and i recall last week eating an entire tub of icecream followed by three glasses of milk, four bowls of cereal and alot of yogurt. On top of that I've been addicted to fruit, and couldnt stop eating it. I've pretty much been eating like a vegetarian--and I am normally not a vegetarian. So my eating patterns most definetly changed last month, radically. All in all, I'm just wondering if it's possible I was pregnant and didn't know. and if it's possible I might have had a very early miscarriage today. Any help would be really appreciated.

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: Given that you have been on birth control pills for the past six weeks, a pregnancy is less likely. Nonetheless, pregnancy should always be ruled out if you are having pregnancy-type symptoms.

I would urge you to get a sensitive pregnancy test done at your GYN or clinic as soon as possible. Those urine tests can detect down to 20 (or less) units of pregnancy hormone (blood tests can detect down to 5 units). One of the most worrisome outcomes would be a molar pregnancy (but these produce high levels of pregnancy hormone so should trigger a pregnancy test). If the test is a clear negative then you can be evaluated for other causes of your significant symptoms such as the severe pain/cramping.

Yours,
Jane
