Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: If the first day of your last period was 7/13, and some type of bleeding lasted for 5 days, then you would likely not be due to ovulate until 7/27. A reasonable home pregnancy test should be accurate around the time your flow should arrive. Even more certain would be a result that was done a week after the expected onset of menstruation (ie in your case 7/20).

If you were wondering about possible implantation bleeding on July 13th, you could have a positive urine test around July 27th.

There might be another possible reason for the symptoms you describe. As you know, bilateral breast tenderness can be a very early sign of pregnancy, appearing as early as two weeks after conception. This is thought to be related to increasing levels of hormones such as estrogen. In a month without an ovulation, not only can a menstrual period be missed or lighter/earlier, but there can be breast tenderness as well. This is similar to the increased breast tenderness experienced by some women when first taking postmenopausal hormone therapy.

Next Friday is the 27th of July so that is actually a very good time to be seen by your MD for the most accurate assessment of pregnancy.

Yours,
Jane

Can u explain what deciding bleeding is and how to determine if u had it. I have same q as lady above. I hve been on pill fr two years. Got my bleeding for 4 days (standard is 4-5 days this time or came 1 day late) regular flow as always and heavy bad cramping.. This was two weeks ago but since then consistently feel fatigue, breast sourness, nausea and even lower abdominal pain. Is pregnancy even possible?

Dear njerisals: Both implantation bleeding and decidual bleeding can occur early in a pregnancy. Here is the best description of these two types of bleeding I could find:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-decidual-bleeding.htm

In your specific situation (on birth control pills for two years) pregnancy is less likely--but it should be ruled out first, given your pregnancy-like symptoms.

If the test results are negative then the search for your symptoms should be widened. The nausea/fatigue/lower abdominal pain could be a pelvic infection or an infection of the kidney or bowel. I would urge you to see the GYN or clinic that prescribed your Pill. They can do a reliable pregnancy test, and evaluate you for infections.

Yours,
Jane
