Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear sandybradley: While penile yeast infections in men are relatively rare, if he was on long term antibiotics and is not circumcised he MIGHT get a fungal infection. Remember men do get other types of fungal infections in the genital area (eg "jock itch").

It would be unlikely, unless his prostate infection was from gonorrhea or chlamydia, that you would get a vaginal infection from his ejaculate. If you were my patient I would want to see you and do an exam of your vaginal discharge. If it was not a simple yeast infection vaginal cultures might be helpful to rule out other types of infections. You should also find out what organism was suspected in your husband's infection and share that information with your GYN.

Yours,
Jane

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP replied to sandybradley's response:
Dear sandybradley: Despite the absence of burning/pain with intercourse, vaginal itching/redness could be a yeast infection. Fortunately that is one of the easier things to diagnose by looking at a sample of your discharge. Some of the less common reasons for your symptoms might include:

1. Lichen planus flare--an autoimmune disorder also found in the mouth.

2. Cytolytic vaginitis--an overgrowth of the beneficial hydrogen peroxide producing lactobacilli normally found in the vagina.

3. Atropic vaginitis--lowered estrogen levels can create very thin vaginal tissues which itch and burn (but usually sex is uncomfortable).

4. Nontypical bacterial infection--these can be cause by an overgrowth of E. Coli or other bacteria.

You are definitely doing the right thing in seeing your GYN so you can get the most "for sure" answer.

Yours,
Jane
