One more question Jane

I really thought I was getting a break from having a period but after a few days, it is back. Not heavy, just here again. Is there some natural remedy I could try until I get a D&C next month. I am also going the next two weeks for iron infusions. Got any ideas for a natural remedy for now?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear jcmmmc: Alas, I do not know of any natural, over the counter treatment to halt dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Some women will try natural progesterone cream, chasteberry extracts ("Vitex"), but I haven't seen these be effective for a rapid relief of abnormal bleeding.

One consideration specific to you would be to avoid any hormone type treatments not prescribed by your GYN. A few of the over the counter progesterone creams can have enough pharmaceutical progesterone to impact the cells in the lining of the uterus. This has the possibility to confound the lab diagnosis of your D&C endometrial biopsy.

With ovulatory bleeding (which yours may not be), use of ibuprofen type drugs can slow down a flow. However the dose used in one study was 400 mg three times a day which should not be used longer term without consulting your MD.

Yours,
Jane
