I haven't gotten my period after my D&C over 5 weeks ago

On June 14th I had a D&C due to a miscarriage. My husband and I are eager to start trying again. However, my doctor told me that she wanted me to have at least one period before we start trying. I totally understand the risk involved with not waiting. I spotted for about a week after the surgery. I haven't bled since then though. This is a little bit concerning to me. I'm not sure if this is normal, or should I call my doctor? Has this happened to any of you?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear AlicisaNicole: We are sorry to hear about the recent loss of your pregnancy. It sounds like it was a very desired pregnancy, which can make the loss even more difficult.

Generally we tell women that, after a first trimester loss, one can expect a "real period" in about 6-8 weeks. If you are having unprotected sex, one can certainly conceive before the next "real period" if you happen to have intercourse around the time an ovulation occurs. You are correct in assuming that the spotting after procedure was not a "real" period.

There are a couple of other elements to consider. First, if you had a history of very irregular periods before, it can take longer before your cycles resume. Second, the emotional (and physical) stress of the miscarriage can sometimes delay the return of ovulations---as can a multitude of other stressors.

Some OB/GYNs do advise that women wait until their first real period before trying to conceive again. This ensures that the lining of the uterus is back to where it needs to be to nurture a conception, and that ovulations have returned. If you have not had a flow by mid-August it is reasonable to contact your OB/GYN and let them know.

Gosh, we hope that you have a period soon and are able to conceive when you wish.

In Sympathy,
Jane

Jane,

Thank you for your quik response and sympathy. I do have good news. I started my period finally. The not so goods for me though is that I am in a lot of pain with this one. The cramping is constant. My flow is heavier then normal. That is to be expected from what I have read online. I'm staring for feel sick to my stomach at times too. Not sure what that is about.

Now just looking forward to conceiving again soon.
