What is the cause of my missed periods?

I started my cycle when I was about 11 years old. It wasn't a regular cycle but I had very heavy bleeding. Around 14 or 15 after moving to a new state months would go by before it was that time of the month. I went to the doctor and spent years of being tested for different things. The doctors could just not figure out what was wrong. They put me on a birth control pill called Estrostep and that seemed to do the trick, however once I was 18 and on my own I stopped taking the pill. I always had unprotected sex and never got pregnant even years after I stopped birth control. I have been with the same guy since I was 20 and he has been faithful although I was not but I have been tested after the last time I cheated and I have no STD's. Occasionally I would get my period after 6 months or so. In my mid to late 20's I stopped my cycle almost completely. I was about 27 the last time I went to the doctor and because it was a new doctor and he was really good looking when he seemed to have an answer I told him I didn't have the symptom he asked me about. He asked if I had a lot of hair growth. Around the age of 12 or 13 I noticed I had started to grow hair on my stomach so I started to shave it especially during the summer. Over the years it has gotten worse it is much more darker and coarser. I have also started to grow very dark facial hair, but it seems that my arm and leg hair is still normal. I also have to shave my armpits at least once a day and my back has started to get furry and now I'm growing it on my chest and around my nipples. I know we want to have children one day and I feel it will be impossible because I have no clue what is wrong and cannot afford a lot of tests or even doctor appts. I had months over the past few years, I am now 32, where I had the symptoms of my period starting, my breasts would hurt and usually the nest day it would start. But now when this happens I spot the day after and that is the end or sometimes nothing happens at all. In February I had this happen and thought nothing of it and the next day I was at school and when I went to the bathroom I was bleeding heavily. It lasted about 4 days and that was the last time. As a kid when I was getting my period monthly and it was extremely heavy I would also have it sometimes for 2 weeks. I feel like I'm abnormal and I will never know what the problem is. My thyroid was tested normal and everything else that my gynecologist did tests for all came back negative. I have always wanted to be a mom more than anything in the world I would like to know if one day I can have my own children.

Have you been tested for PCOS recenty? The symptoms you mention, especially the extra hair, point to PCOS.
