Yeast Infection and late period

BNEL1020 posted:
Two weeks ago I had a yeast infection. It was exactly a week before my period was supposed to start. I took diflucan four days before the day I thought my period would start because the Monistat 3 irritated my skin and only took it once. My cycle lasts about 32 days and now I'm 8 days late.

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear BNEL: Multiple literature searches did not yield any indication of Diflucan (fluconazole) effects on menstrual function. One source did list impotence and hair loss in men--but I am assuming that is with larger doses and prolonged treatment for systemic fungal infections (eg HIV-AIDS).

If a pregnancy test is negative then the next most common reason for a late/missed period is a late/missed ovulation. Such events are more common than women would assume.
If you are using some type of hormonal birth control, than a late/missed period may be a side effect of the contraceptive.

Bottom line, do a pregnancy test if you are sexually active. Hopefully, with your history of predictable cycles, your cycle will reset itself naturally. If not, contact your GYN.

Yours,
Jane
