i'm a 31 year old female and i've always been very regular with my menstrual cycle. however, over the past 8 weeks i've had my period 4 times. occassionally i have felt a stabbing pain in my lower left abdomen area also and i have been experiencing vertigo here and there. i just started my 4th period today, so naturally concerned i did take a pregnancy test and it is negative. i have had 2 kids before and i've not experienced this with them either (9 year old and a 1 year old now). i am a heavy drinker and smoker on occasion. i do have an appt with a doctor for a week from now, but i'm curious as to possibilities and thought i'd pick someone's brain. any ideas?

The first thing you need to understand is that you are not having four menstrual periods in the past 8 weeks. At least two of these events are abnormal vaginal bleeding episodes.

Medical issues like uterine fibroids (benign growths in the uterus) can cause bleeding if they expand into blood vessels. So can more serious tumor issues.

By the way, this has nothing to do with a pregnancy. It is good that you will be getting this looked into medically. There is a pretty good risk of anemia (which may explain your vertigo) with continued blood loss.
