Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear palacios: Gosh, it sounds like you have already been through a lot in having the right ovary removed. It also sounds like the right ovary may have been caught up in adhesions (filmy bands of scar tissue that arise from an infection, earlier surgery, or endometriosis).

If I am tracking you correctly, there is a 50/50 chance that adhesions may have impacted your other ovary. My best GUESS, if all this is true, is that everything will be done to save your left ovary. If adhesions are present a surgeon will likely try and remove them.

In terms of keeping a remaining ovary healthy, there are no specific medications for this purpose. A GYN could suggest using birth control pills to try and prevent the formation of ovarian cysts. If endometriosis is the culprit, a GYN might suggest medications to keep the endometriosis in suppression mode until you are ready to have children.

Bottom line, you are asking all the right questions. When you see the GYN after the ultrasound/sonogram, be sure and get a specific answer about what condition caused the right ovary to be removed. Feel free to write us back (put my name in the subject line so I can find you).

Yours,
Jane
