Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear mkaster: You have correctly understood the cause of your constant breakthrough bleeding (BTB). With progestin only methods of birth control (eg Implanon, mini-pills, DepoProvera, Mirena IUD) the lining of the uterus can become very thinned out. While a healthy lining is a thin lining, a very thin lining can be easier to de-stabilize--causing BTB.

Your ovaries are still making estrogen, but it may take more estrogen to make the lining somewhat thicker. Alas, there are no over the counter products which can produce the amount of estrogen needed for this job. If the BTB gets really bad your GYN might be able to give you a short course of low dose estrogen (eg samples of menopausal doses of estrogen) to see if that will abate the BTB.

Yours,
Jane
