Infection?

I'm sure this is TMI, but a few weeks back my husband and I had sex in a local lake (with a 2 year old, you do what you have to!). My period, which was due 2 weeks later, was a week late, so I suspected that I could have been pregnant. However, when my period did finally arrive, it was very, very light, to the point where I could have used a liner, but it did last almost a week. Since it stopped last week, I've just been feeling off. Very queasy, uneasy, crampy, achy, just not feeling well and having lots of tummy troubles. Then last night, I had a little bit of pain down there when I was with my husband.

I'm now concerned about an infection. Any input? Just a little nervous that the lake idea wasn't the greatest...

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: The first thing to do is to rule out pregnancy. Even reliable forms of birth control can fail.

Once pregnancy has been eliminated as the cause for the late period and nausea/cramping, then the next most likely cause would be an ovarian cyst. A cyst can make menstrual changes, and produce pelvic pain (especially with sex). Yet a cyst is less likely to prompt nausea/gut symptoms.

In terms of the lake water, it would be relatively difficult for lake water to get up through the opening of the cervix and into the inside of the uterus (normally a sterile area). Lake water would not change your menstrual pattern, but if swallowed it could prompt gut symptoms.

For the most "for sure" answer you should see your GYN or clinic. The can do the pregnancy test, check for an ovarian cyst, and look for any signs of some type of infection.

Yours,
Jane
