Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear occyschick: Sometimes nipple stimulation (even rubbing) can prompt the pituitary gland to increase secretion of prolactin (hormone involved with milk production). This can be checked with a simple blood test for prolactin levels.

In terms of the itching, here are two links to a more detailed discussion of the causes of itchy nipples:

Occyschick, after comparing your symptoms and history to the causes of itchy nipples you should see either a GYN or dermatologist so you can get the most "for sure" diagnosis. Once there is an accurate diagnosis you can get a treatment targeted specifically to your condition.

Yours,
Jane
