I went to the GYN for my regular annual check-up last week. This was my first time with this doctor as my old doctor retired. Previously I had been on the DEPO shot for years and just got off of it in the spring of 2011. Since this time I have only really had one period and the other I would call spotting. After my examination and after I talked with the doctor about my history of periods she told me I was in going thru perimenopause. So I thought ok. Then I told her I needed to talk to her about birth control. She replied I did not have to worry about it. I said HUH??? She explained that I was not producing an egg and if I am not producing an egg I could not get pregnant. I was in shock! I was very confused because I thought as long as you were having a period of some sort you could still get pregnant and then I also thought you had to have not had a period for 12 months and be in menopause to not become pregnant. OMG...now I am really confused. I left and came home and immediately did some research. Everything I see about perimenopause.....YOU CAN GET PREGNANT!!!! Why would she tell me not to worry about it??? OMG.....I have been a nervous wreck ever since and I dont want to call and ask her is she sure! Please give me some advice on this.

Yes, if you are having a period, even if it's irregular, you can get pregnant. I would call your doctor back and ask again.
