Urinary problems during my period?

This only happens around my period, and typically only in the afternoon...

Out of nowhere, I'll get an intense tingling feeling accompanied by a strong urge to urinate. When this happens, I don't have any feeling of fullness in my bladder, just the tingling urge. So I'll try to go to the bathroom, but of course, nothing comes out. And I can't get the tingling urge to go away.

Does anyone know what this is or how to alleviate it? Is this is a normal symptom to experience during my period?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: Often a sudden urgent need to void (even when the bladder is not full) is typical for "overactive bladder syndrone." This can be triggered by an inappropriate firing of the nerves inside the bladder wall. Yet, MULTIPLE literature searches at the National Library of Medicine site did not yield a single citation on an increased incidence of bladder spasms around the time of menstruation.

Some women report an increase in irritable bladder symptoms when they increase the use of carbonated beverages, caffeine, artificial sweeteners (diet colas anyone?). Given that your symptoms are not super common you might consider doing a "symptom diary" where you note any possible precipitating factors, relieving factors, etc. Take that information to your GYN, if indicated they may refer you to a urologist--or do a phone consult with a urologist on your behalf.

Yours,
Jane

Thank you for your response. I'll look into overactive bladder syndrome and start a symptom diary.

I came up with an additional theory as well. Do UTIs occur more frequently during menstruation? I'm thinking of running over to a clinic to get tested.
