my daughter is approaching her 18th birthday & hasn't started her period. I was late with mine, should we be concerned?

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear brucbar: While late onset of menstruation may be a genetic trait, with no flow by age 18 she should at least have a consult with a GYN. Even more concerning would be a young women without any breast development, pubic hair, etc. Women without any secondary sexual characteristics by age 14 also should have a consult with a GYN.

There can be a myriad of reasons why an 18 year old has not yet started her flow (eg issues with the uterus/ovaries/vagina), problems with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, chromosomal conditions, etc.). Hopefully she is just following in your footsteps of being normal, but a late starter.

Yours,
Jane
