Hi.
I have been taking YAZ oral contraceptive for about 3 years. After about a year of being on the pill I began a rapid weight gain of about 5lbs a month. I went from 5'7about 135 to 175 in the coarse of 2 years so I came off the pill about a month ago, continued my diet and excersize routine thinking I would loose wieght. I have gone from 175 to 192 in a MONTH! I am terrified and not sure what to do...I am trying to detox my body with healthy foods and excersize but I am not sure how else to combat it. I am hoping after my hormones normalize it will come off as quickly as it has come on but I can't help but stress it! Has anyone else had a similar experience? How did you combat it? Is there an actually medical explaination or should I go to a doctor to have other options checked out?

I really want to be back at my 135!!!

Dear An: The average amount of weight gained on birth control pills (BCP) is usually under five pounds. That is not to say that some women will lose weight, and perhaps another 10-15% will gain weight. Alas, you may be in that later category.

It is very concerning about the 17 pound weight gain in one month--and that was a month that you were not taking the Yaz BCP. The hormones in BCPs should be out of the system within five days or so.

Yes, you should see either your GYN/clinic or a primary care MD for an assessment. They can check both for low thyroid, type 2 diabetes, and calculate the impact of diet/exercise.

I actually had the personal experience of weight gain on a specific type of BCP (in was not Yaz!). It did not melt off when I finished that BCP research study. It took a marked increase in cardio-type exercise while cutting down potion sizes of healthy food choices.

Hope this next year will be the one when your weight starts going back down.

Been There,
Jane
