Breast tenderness

angputch posted:
I have been experiencing breast tenderness for over two months now and I went and had my IUD removed to see if that would help and I was put on the Loestrin 24 to try and regulate myself back out before i have my tubes tied so I can get off all of these hormones. It is so very painful and seems to be worse in the evening. When I change clothes at night and take off my bra, it hurts so bad it makes me want to cry. I now have to wear a sports bra to bed to keep from being in pain. My doctor saud that this is from my recent weight gain but I am not sure I believe that. This happened to me once before about 12-13 years ago once I had been on the depo shot for about 5-6 years and they then suggested I get off for a while. I don't know why this is happening and I don't think it's normal. Please help!

Dear angputch: You had a similar experience of breast pain after being on DepoProvera for several years. This current episode began while you were using an IUD. Was it a Mirena IUD with the synthetic progesterone? You were then put on the Loestrin 24 which has a synthetic progesterone along with low dose estrogen. Hope I am tracking you correctly.

You did the right thing in seeing your GYN for a breast exam. There can be a number of causes of bilateral breast tenderness including: hormonal effects on fibrocystic breast condition, breast cysts, breast infections, estrogen effects on breast tissue, and most rarely breast cancer. Here is a concise overview about bilateral breast tenderness:

Hopefully getting off all hormones after your tubal ligation will relieve your severe breast pain. Given that you are more comfortable at night with a sports bra, you might consider a professionally fitted support bra to increase comfort through out your day,

Yours,
Jane
