Dear An: If you have the type of bleeding disorder which keeps blood from clotting readily (eg Von Willebrand Disease) that can certainly prompt prolonged and heavy bleeding. Here is a link to an article written for GYNs by ACOG (AMerican College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists) that details symptoms, testing, and treatments. It also discusses GYN implications such as types of birth control which can be recommended.

http://www.acog.org/Resources_And_Publications/Committee_Opinions/Committee_on_Adolescent_Health_Care/Von_Willebrand_Disease_in_Women

Even without a bleeding disorder, some adolescent women will have consistent heavy and prolonged periods. In this instance the usual cause is very infrequent ovulations.

PLEASE, please ask your hematologist for a referral to a GYN. Even your local county family planning clinic can start a work up of your prolonged bleeds. There are a variety of treatment approaches which can be taken.

In Concern,
Jane
