HI, i took the depo shot in may 2011. i was told by my ob/gyn that i would have abnormal bleeding my first shot. i bleed very heavy the first three months after my first shot. i went back to ob/gyn and told them i was bleeding through a super tampon in under an hour. she told me she was going to give me the second shot and that it was supposed to stop the bleeding. once again i was bleeding another three month through a super in under an hour. when i went back to her she told me that she was going to take me off the shot so she did. it is the end of aug. 2012 and im still bleeding. but its gotten worse everytime i stand up, i get this weird pressure on my head and i black out for like 10 second and im fine until i stand up again. im passing major blood clots, and when i take other birth control i stop bleeding and my period is normal while im on the pill but when i quit taking it i start bleeding again. the blood clots happen everyday and im still bleeding through a super in under an hour. i have lost some weight, i still eat right every day. i weighed 140 when i started the shot in may 2011 and i weigh 115 in aug. 2012. do you know what i can do to stop this and will this cause me not to have kids. oh yeah i had a basic exams and have been to the e.r. because the blood clots were so bad and they found nothing wrong and my blood is not low at all. its actually pretty high the doctor told me.

Dear AAMBUR:It sounds like you are having this very heavy bleeding and clots currently while NOT using a birth control pill. Hope I am tracking you correctly. It is also unclear to me if you are having this bleeding problem erratically or only during a regularly scheduled period.

Some women will have either very heavy/prolonged bleeding or more erratic bleeding if they miss their monthly ovulations. As you likely have read there can be many reasons for missing ovulations: thyroid problems, pituitary problems, ovarian cysts, physical stressors (eg sudden increases in exercise, crash dieting), emotional stressors (problems with boyfriends/girlfriends, money), increased body weight, anorexia, rotating shifts at work, etc. You mentioned that you have lost a dramatic amount of weight over the past year--the body could perceive that as a stress.

If a woman is not ovulating at the time she is trying to conceive, it can take longer to get pregnant. Otherwise the amount of bleeding does not interfere unless the heavy bleeding is from a fibroid inside the cavity of the uterus.

In your specific case your blood work (eg thyroid, anemia) were apparently normal. If you have had a recent ultrasound, that should identify any ovarian cysts or fibroids inside the uterus. Your own GYN should be able to give you the most "for sure" answer as to why they think the bleeding is persisting.

The brief blackouts when standing might be "orthostatic hypotension". Here is a link to more about this:
