I have taken 5 pregnancy test and they all were positive. 3 at home and 2 in the doctors office. I have had 2 ultrosounds one in the E.R where the doctor said he could see the sack but not signs of an embryo. The secound ultrasound was in the doctors office where he said there where no sign of a baby. What am I to think I suppose to be 7wks if the collection is right. I am so confused.

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear jarenee: There are a number of POSSIBLE explanations for this:

1. You are earlier in the pregnancy than what would be expected by date of last menstrual period.

2. You have had a "missed miscarriage" where the pregnancy tests are positive, but the pregnancy is fated to be lost. In this case the blood HCG levels should drop.

3. An extremely rare cancer can produce HCG levels but is not a pregnancy. I would doubt this given your ultrasound results.

4. There was a twin conception where one embryo is in the tube and the other was a non-viable pregnancy inside the uterus. This is the most rare situation.

Jarenee, it is important to do the follow up blood HCG tests (usually 48 hours apart) and/or follow up ultrasounds recommended by your GYN MD. This can help find the actual cause of your positive test results. Your GYN or clinic should also be able to give you the most "for sure" explanation once the cause is found.

Yours,
Jane
