Dear jenwalti: I am assuming that you have not had any pelvic or vaginal surgeries--hope I am tracking correctly. Shooting vaginal pain can arise from the uterus or cervix or an infection of the uterus. Scar tissue inside the abdomen (eg from endometriosis) MIGHT put traction on uterus/vagina complex. Even a large ovarian cyst could create torsion and pain in that general area.

You are doing the right thing in seeing your GYN for the most definite diagnosis. You can expect a very thorough pelvic exam and perhaps an ultrasound to visualize the ovaries. Unfortunately, scar tissue ("adhesions") does not visualize well on ultrasound.

If you do get a clear diagnosis, would you be willing to write us all back? Through the magic of the internet your very clear subject line will bring other women to your post who have a similar symptom. Thus you may help out many women in the future.

In Gratitude,
Jane

Hi jenwalti,

I have pelvic floor dysfunction and have a couple of other friends that have the same. It can cause all kinds of weird sharp and dull pains in the vaginal, anal and lower abdominal regions. Check it out if you run into any dead ends.
