Hair Loss - Cause Unkonwn

Hello,

I am 33 years old and am active and healthy with healthy and positive relationships and lifestyle and have been experiencing much more than normal hair loss the last few weeks. I went to my doctor and she has tested my thyroid, tested me for lupus and alopecia. Everything came back normal. She also did not think I had a scalp fungus. I have been doing some extensive reading on Web MD and on the Mayo Clinic web site about other possibilities and seems like 3 things could be the culprit:
  • previous stress (I started a new career which was very stressful from January to April)
  • I got off the Nuva Ring (I had been on the Nuva Ring for 7 years and birth control for 16 year)
  • I was taking DHEA for Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome prescribed to me by another doctor (I took 7 mg a day for 3 months).
I spoke with my GP and she thinks my hair loss could possibly be from a combination of these things.

Questions:

  • I read that hair loss cause by DHEA may stop very soon after getting off the drug. Is this true?
  • I would also like to know if hair grows back after getting off the Nuva Ring or if I should consider getting back on another BC that is not associated with hair loss?
  • Are there any other tests I should consider or questions to ask my doctor?
  • About how long will I continue to lose my hair? I know this is a difficult question to answer. I am just afraid to lose all my hair and I want to take whatever steps I can to keep it.

Grateful for help!

Any changes in hormones (pregnancy, delivery, going on/off birth control meds or other hormones such as DHEA) can definitely affect hair growth phases. This type of shedding is called telogen effluvium and generally stops on its own and the hair regrows if things return to "normal." This can take longer in some than others and sometimes the shedding "switch" doesn't want to reset.

My hair shed after going off birth control pills and then again post-partum but it never lasted more than a few months or so and then my hair gradually thickened back up. But after a hysterectomy, it shed excessively, continues to shed and isn't regrowing. But that's likely due to the severe changes to my hormones. I'm on HRT but it's not the same as having ovaries. My hair is now very thin and fine textured - very upsetting!

Thank you for your response. Do you know if there is a way to get your hormones to re-balance more quickly? What is HRT?

HRT is hormone replacement therapy.

I don't know of anything to balance your hormones more quickly. It just takes a little time for the body to readjust. I know it's hard to be patient when it seems like the hair shedding will never stop! Hang in there!
