Sulfamethoxazole Question

I recently started taking the antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole for a UTI and since started it, I've been getting bad stomach ache and sore throat. I've read that these could be side effects but is it possible that they are allergic reactions? Is there a way I can tell the difference?

Dear An: Thanks for awaiting a reply. Here is the clearest discussion of drug side effect vs drug allergic reaction I could find:

Take a quick look then call the MD or clinic that prescribed your sulfa drug. They can give you the most for sure answer, and advice about continuing, or changing, your medication.
