Hello,
I have been having very bad stomach pain....bloating and cramps. It feels like gas but just wont go away. It feels like i will be starting my period but nothing starts.
I had a light period about a week and a half ago but it wasnt a normal period then like i used to get. I had my daughter 8 months ago, could this just be my body getting back to normal?
Thank you

Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear MERI: This kind of pain can be from a number of body systems:

1. GYN--If the time of the bloating and cramping is midcycle (eg about 14 days from the start of your last flow) you might be having pain from ovulation. You mentioned a shorter/lighter period. This might suggest that you currently have an ovarian cyst. An undetected pregnancy should also be ruled out.

2. GI--An acute infection in the bowel (viral or bacterial) can prompt your symptoms. Other bowel conditions (eg spasms or diverticulosis) can create severe pelvic-type pain.

3. Urinary--A bladder infection or kidney stone can create lower abdominal pain.

Given that the bad is "very bad" I would urge you to see your MD or clinic. Even your local county family planning clinic can do an assessment for GYN causes. They would likely test your urine, do a pregnancy test, and a careful abdominal/pelvic exam.

In Concern,
Jane
