Birth Control pills and laxatives
ebinder1 posted:

I have a question about birth control and laxatives/stool softeners. I have a pretty sensitive stomach so I can get constipated easily if I eat the wrong thing. Is it okay to take stool softeners and laxatives while I'm on the birth control pill or will they decrease the effectiveness of the pills? How long should I take stool softeners/laxatives?

Thank you,

Laxatives and stool softners work in the large bowel. Birth control pills are absorbed higher up (in the small bowel). Taking them will not decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Laxatives work by stimulating the nerve endings in the bowel. If used too much or too long, these nerve endings can lose their natural response, causing major issues with severe constipation/impaction. There are folks who, unfortunately, are "hooked" on laxatives and cannot have a bowel movement without the use of these agents.
