Jane Harrison Hohner, RN, RNP responded:
Dear An: Your last "normal" period was 8/12, and on 8/25 you started mid-cycle bleeding which persisted to 9/14--hope I am tracking you correctly. I would concur with your assessment that the stress of the surgery likely prompted the erratic bleeding. Thus it would be difficult to know if the 8/25 bleed was a prolonged bleed triggered by an ovulation or more likely, triggered by the stress of the laproscope.

If you are having unprotected sex and trying to conceive, you could conceive at any time--even if you do not know when exactly an ovulation has occurred. Most of the super sensitive home pregnancy tests should give a very accurate answer about 14 days after conception. Sometimes we recommend taking another test 21 days after possible conception to catch late implantations.

In terms of when is a period considered to be late, that would be a week beyond your normal cycle length. In your specific case (if you generally have 28 day cycles), you are definitely late--even by guesstimating from the end of the three week stress bleed.

I would urge you to return to your OB/GYN and get a pregnancy test done in their clinic. They can give you guidelines about how long you should wait until use of progesterone pills to kick start a flow. Hopefully, if you had regular ovulations before the surgery, that pattern will return. Best wishes on conceiving that desired second baby.

Yours,
Jane
