Period twice a month

I'm 18 and have been having periods since I was around 13/14. I have never been that regular, my cycle can be between 30 and 40 days, however for the last couple of months I have had a period every two weeks, like clockwork. The extra periods do not cause any cramps etc, but I bleed like normal, however the times where my period is meant to occur has me nearly bed-ridden on some days with the pain of the cramps.
Any ideas to what this could be?
