Is saw palmetto safe for women?

Hi, I'm new to here, so I'm not really sure how this goes, and I'm not even sure if this is the right place for this question, but here it is anyway: I'm a 20 year old female, and I've always had persistent oily skin, cystic acne along my cheeks and jawline, and in the past couple of years I've started noticing that my once very thick hair is getting noticeably thinner. Both my mother and my grandmother have very thin hair, and my grandmother suffered from ovarian cysts before having a hysterectomy. I know that all these conditions are related to elevated testosterone levels and/or androgen sensitivity, so about 2 months ago I started taking saw palmetto to hopefully spare myself some or all of these conditions. Lately, though, I've been noticing that I'm having sort of mini hot flashes, even when it's cold in the room! And at night sometimes I wake up sweating. So my question is, is this related to taking the saw palmetto? And is saw palmetto even safe for women? It has actually cleared up my skin a good deal--it's not nearly as oily as it used to be. Are these "hot flashes" just a phase and will soon go away? I've seen saw palmetto recommended for women in a number of sources, but is it really safe?

I honestly don't know, but at your age you should not be having hot flashes so I would probably stop it's use and see if they go away. you would be better off to see a dermatologist for the acne and get a prescription.

It sounds to me like you have polycystic ovarian syndrome -- you need to see your pcp, gyno & probably an endo to get tested for insulin resistence. For the hair -- you have to stop the androgens. i've heard that yasmin is the best bcp for that. Good luck!

i have researched and i found that taking saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol together will help stop hair thinning. zinc is also good for hair growth. as for the hot flashes i read that taking wild yams and/or fenugreek will balance out estrogen changes. i know what your going through with the hair thinning, i'm older and has recently had hair loss over the years. i can not deal with this, not when i have always had a healthy head of hair. i wear wigs now and i can't see myself doing this from here on out. so don't stop taking the saw palmetto just add other things to balance it out and you should be ok. i will be starting to take them soon myself, can't wait to see the results. i also have oily skin. good luck to the both of us.
