Pregnant Jeweler

Hello! I am a jeweler and I've recently become pregnant. I am concerned with the possibility of the chemicals and fumes that I'm around on a semiregular basis having a negative affect. I've been avoiding doing any soldering since I found out that I am pregnant. I work with silver, boric acid and alchol mixtures, and a chemical called sparex most regularly- this is what I need to solder. I also use Tripoli and Rouge for polishing which could be dangerous as an inhalant. The room I work in is small but has a fan exhaust and we usually leave the door open to help ventilate. I've been searching online for info regarding possible birth defects or other problems that could be related with no success.. I have my first doc appt in a little over a week, but am anxious to know whether or not I can work. We are a small scale jewelry op. and as such most days the torch isn't actually running. But, the bottom line is that I don't want to risk anything. MSDS sheets don't pertain to pregnant women. Any advice is most appreciated!

Dear Alex: Congrats on your pregnancy! ...When I was seeing prenatal patients I used the toxicolgy resources at the university to get information on chemical exposures in pregnancy. I have been searching data bases to try and find this for you. Here are some sites which may be helpful:

www.motherisk.org/women/occupationalExposures.jsp

www.ci.tucson.az.us/arthazards/jewel.html

www.ganoksin.com/orchid/archive/200007/msg00109.htm

Hopefully your OB will have a more complete resource to refer to for each of your work place chemicals.

Yours, Jane

I know you posted this a long time ago. Did you ever find out the information. I can barely find anything. Thanks
