causes of frequent periods?

Hi - I am a 46 year old copper IUD wearing woman, whose periods have been on-time (monthly for several years.) For the past six weeks I've been spotting (one tampon daily) and had three two-day "mini-periods." Are these symptoms of perimenopause, or something to be concerned about?
