My Dad has a history of heart disease. He also has a pacemaker/defib. After not feeling well, his pace/defib went off. He is feeling better now and won't seek medical attention. What can happen if he doesn't go to the ER????

Hi:

Especially with a history of heart disease, and even with the aid of a pacemaker/ICD, the possibilities of what can happen include heart attack and sudden cardiac death.

Convince him to see a/his doctor promptly. Best of luck to your dad down the road of life.

Take care,

James Beckerman, MD, FACC responded:
It's important to know whether a defibrillator is working appropriately - meaning, it should shock a person for the right reasons. I would recommend that he contact his cardiologist to share the details of what happened - the cardiologist can advise you whether he needs to be seen immediately or should just schedule a follow-up doctor's visit.
