Diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse

I am 31 and about 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse. At that time, I suddenly had severe heartburn and chest pain and when I went to the doctor I got the diagnosis of MVP. The chest pain was continues, and it was mild to medium like pulsating lasting for half a day so it scared me and first time. He prescribed me Zantac which I took for about 3 weeks and I felt better. Since then I have had frequent light headedness and similar chest pain for a sec or two every 3 months or so. I easily get acidity which I suspect is related to this problem.

Today, I had more than my "normal" episode of dizziness. I almost felt like I was going to faint - and the feeling lasted for 5-10min. I am going to see my doctor soon. But my question is can there anything be done about this dizziness?????? Do I have to live with this all my life? Will this only get worse? I do get easily dehydrated. About 3 days ago I did not have enough liquids. But today I was fine, I was drinking enough water. These episodes are scary. I don't know if anyone in my family has this. Please help me answer the questions if possible. Thankyou so much.

Hi:

"I am going to see my doctor soon."

Excellent!

"Can there anything be done about this dizziness?"

More often than not, yes, though the specific cause obviously has to be determined.

In general-only here, there are various causes of dizziness or lightheadedness, even some prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and dietay supplements.

"Do I have to live with this all my life?"

With MVP itself, yes.

"Will this only get worse?"

Not necessarily, though mitral valve prolapse (MVP, the most common and typically benign heart valve abnormality) may/can progress to mitral valve regurgitation (leakage) at any time.

Some individuals with MVP experience no symptoms at all, or symptoms such as palpitations (a very common irregular heartbeat), and sometimes even chest pain, especially when lying on the left side (as the heart is brought closer to the chest wall).

MVP, described as a distinct billowing inward of the mitral valve's leaflets.

James Beckerman, MD, FACC responded:
Sometimes it's possible for people with MVP (or people without it) to develop dizziness that be related to extra or abnormal heart beats - these can be a little more common in people with MVP. When I have a patient with MVP with intermittent symptoms like these, I like to have them wear a heart monitor sometimes for a few days, just to make sure there isn't a correlation between their symptoms and any extra/abnormal heart beats. This could be something to explore with your own doctor - although it's definitely possible that your type of symptoms are less concerning for this. Take care!
