New US Diet Guidelines: What Not to Eat
Instead of just giving Americans a list of healthy food choices, the federal government takes a stab at showing us what not to eat. Get the facts here.

I was recently in a car accident and hit the steering wheel. My chest was the only thing that really hurt at the time. But a day or so afterwards I started to get a stabbing pain between my shoulder blades along with the chest pain. It got really bad last night and I could not sleep. Heat helps a little but not much. I have taken Ibuprofen and muscle relaxers. Is this something that I really need to have check out or might it go away on its own?

Hi:

"It got really bad last night and I could not sleep"

RED FLAG!

"Is this something that I really need to have check out"

Yes, of course.

"or might it go away on its own?"

No way to tell/know for sure via the Internet (which has serious limitations/restrictions).

Definitely worth mentioning here, and even though the human heart is considered as being well-protected by the breastbone (sternum), sometimes, being involved in a motor vehicle accident can become tragic.

Just one example being, a hemopericrdium (blood leaking into the pericardium, the sac that surrounds the heart), which had directly lead to the death (as stated on the autopsy report that was made public some years back) of well-known comedian and TV personality Steve Allen (who by the way, also had a pre-existing heart condition) shortly (later on, the same day) after he was involved in a minor motor vehicle accident (fender bender). in which he did not seek any/feel that he did not need any medical attention (although there was some impact to the chest area involved).

Best of luck down the road of life.

Take care,

Non-cardiac chest/sternal/thoracic pain

Musculoskeletal-related

The chest contains many muscles, bones, tendons, and cartilage and strains or sprains to any of these may/can can cause chest pain. Chest/sternal/thoracic pain associated with musculoskeletal injury is typically sharp and confined to a specific area of the chest.

The pain may/can be brought on by movement of the chest and/or arms into certain positions, and often is relieved by changing position.

The pain may/can be triggered off by pushing on part of the chest and often become worse when taking a deep breath. Though the pain typically last only seconds, it may/can also persist for days or longer.

If/when chest pain increases when you press your finger on the painful site, or if you can pinpoint the spot that hurts, it is most likely chest wall-related pain, which may/can be caused by strained muscles or ligaments or even by a fractured rib.

Benign chest wall pain/Transitory benign chest wall pain
