I believe that we should think of supplements like medications and use the same standards when considering to take them. Safety and effectiveness need to be supported by scientific studies.
In general, reasonable doses of most vitamins are considered to be safe, although many physicians believe that their effectiveness in preventing disease has been overblown by the media and by those with a financial incentive to sell them. For example, there is data that suggests that vitamin E supplements could be associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Dr. one of things I found is that Europe covers certain supplements under their insurance laws and I have read clinical studies associated with effectiveness.
Y does it seem that American companies are not willing to put the backing behind these supplements that obviously work. The type of clinical studies that are needed to justify a lot of the skepticism cost millions. Being a form pharm rep it seems to come back down to if Big business can't make a buck then they will discredit it.
Lastly, Do you know personally of any cases where someone over dosed on supplements/vitamins?
