I was diagnosed with CHF in June of 2011 and am currently on Lisinopril (20mg at night) and Carvedilol (12.5mg a.m. and p.m.). I do my exercise routine in the mornings after taking the Carvedilol so my heart rate never gets above about 115-118, even though I'm huffing and puffing!
My questions are 1) am I getting a good enough work-out with my HR staying so low and/or 2) should I take my med AFTER my workout to try and get my heart rate up higher for a better workout? I'm trying to do my best for my heart and also the rest of my body (I admit I need to lose about 25 lbs), but it's all very confusing.
First of all, that's great that you are (1) sticking with your medications and (2) continuing to exercise.
A couple thoughts:
1) While exercise can definitely help with weight loss, I tend to break weight loss down to 80% diet, 20% exercise. I like to rebrand exercise as a way to stay healthy, and reduce symptoms from CHF.
2) You will still have a benefit from exercise even if your pulse stays in that range. You didn't mention your age, but my guess is that you are still hitting at least 60% of your predicted maximum heart rate, which in my estimation is still giving you benefits.
Thank you for the quick reply Dr Beckerman! I am only 52 and the CHF is due to massive chemo and radiation due to past history of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My EF was 40 when first diagnosed with CHF and as of last June was 55. Valves and arteries are great!
I've never been a 'bad' eater, but could definitely be better...and I am working on that. Unfortunately, onset of menopause isn't helping either, lol.
