James Beckerman, MD, FACC responded:
When a person develops an infection on the surface of a heart valve, or less commonly on the inner lining of the heart muscle, doctors can sometimes use ultrasound testing to visualize a small mass, which may include bacteria, white blood cells, and other biological matter involved in body's attempt to fight the infection. We call that a vegetation.
