Minimal Pericardial Effusion

Hello

Back in May of this year I had an echo done for palpitations and they ended up finding a very small pericardial effusion, so my doctor had me do every blood test known to man and also have a chest xray, all tests came back normal and I was ordered to have another echo down 9 months later, which I just did and the effusion is still there, still small and has not grown, they now want me to see a cardiologist, should I be concerned? or are they just going to monitor this? I'm a 44 year old female with no know health problems.

thank you

James Beckerman, MD, FACC responded:
It will be important to see the cardiologist, but in general, if a person has a very small effusion that does not change with time, is asymptomatic, and has undergone significant testing that has come out normal, we tend to monitor it. Hope all goes well for you with your visit!
