A woman in my rehab class has to go in for Quadruple bypass because her stents are clogging up. She is disappointed after getting the stents, quitting smoking and exercising more that she has to have open heart surgery now anyway. She is 54.

My wife went to school with her and I went to school with her sister.

I am going to get her a card and have the people @ rehab sign it and take it to her next week.

There is a whole lot more to serious rehab besides smoking cessation and exercise. Among other things, excessive exercise is not a good thing.

With a dozen inoperable 80% blockages, my four years since my two stents were inserted seem all the more remarkable. I am extremely careful about my diet, and to get my regular exercise at appropriate levels.

Please suggest she write in to the WebMD forums to get information beyond what she is given, and be involved in discussions that can benefit her.

Yes there is more. One other step she did was to quit her high stress job with the state.

It may have come to late to prevent her current problems but it will definitely help to prevent future ones.

I may know more tomorrow when I visit her. It seems that her body isn't accepting the stents. The Dr. opted not to try medicated ones at her angiogram last week.

She was never overweight but poor diet, smoking, stress and a body that naturally produces high cholesterol will still cause heart disease.

High LDL cholesterol requires oxidation to be dangerous by being ingested to immune cells masquerading as artery repair mechanism.

Stress raises blood pressure and damaging arteries and allowing blockage sites to form.

Smoking, stress, lack of exercise, and poor diet all contribute to reduce and make dysfunctional EPCs, the body's stem cells that do proper arterial repair.

When she gets out of the hospital, she needs to review the tips I have put on the exchanges, and other heart health information. Six months to a year of aggressive diet intervention should help her tremendously.

If uninterested, she should write a will and design her own funeral, because otherwise it will come sooner, not later.
