Some high blood pressure drugs cause 2x breast cancer risk
engineerguy posted:
Hi folks,

Use of calcium channel blocker antihypertensive medication for 10 years or more, was linked to more than a 2x increased risk of breast cancer. Calcium channel blocker meds are taken by 17.3% of women over 65.

One theory as to why this correlation exists, is that the calcium channel blocker prevents cell apoptosis, which is one of the body's defenses against cancer.

Other kinds of blood pressure medications (diuretics, beta-blockers or angiotensin receptor blockers) did not show a correlation.

Here's the JAMA September 2013 abstract:

Here's Dr. Fuhrman's blog that alerted me to this:

The Fuhrman Eat To Live program prevents and reverses high blood pressure. If you have hypertension, take the medication your doctor prescribes, but also work with diet and exercise to improve your condition. (The medication helps you live with the condition, while the condition gradually worsens.)
