I am so scared!

I was just told that I have Hep C, and I am so scared. I work in the healthcare industry and must have contracted it that way but I'm unsure. I donate plasma regularly and was told my plasma came back positive for Hep C antibodies, but I am going in to see my doctor today for a confirmatory test.

I'm only 24 and have a 3 year old little girl that I don't want to ever loose and the thought that I could die from this, has me completely terrified. I've never had any STDs or anything, so this is quite the shock!

I don't even know why I'm writing.. I just need someone to talk to who knows what I'm going through.

Thanks for listening.

Don't be afraid, it's not a death sentence. A new medication just came out and with the other 2 - Ribavarin and Interferon, it has an 80 % success rate of eradicating the virus completely.

I was diagnosed when it was called non-A/non-B and went several years with no problems. It's only when my liver enzymes became slightly elevated that I went to a Gastoentenlogist (sic). The process, 12 years ago was to first get blood tested for the viral load count (PCR Quantative) and geneotyped - I'm 1A which used to be the most common in the USA and the least resistant to treatment. I also had a liver biopsy. I did a years treatment of Interferon/Ribavarin and am considered a responder/relapser. I've been fine with no liver damage. I will be starting August 1st, a course of treatment with the Ribavarin, Interferon and the 3rd new drug that the FDA just approved. The good news is that I may only be on it for 6 months and not a full year.

I was around your age with a 5 year old at the time of my diagnosis - it is scary, but treatment now is better than ever

1. More people die with it than from it.
2. Treatment is getting better for type 1, form 20'%, to 50% and now up to 85%! There is great reason for hope. I hear the treatment is hard on some people, but everyone is different.
3. Early diagnosis is better! 24 is better than
52 like me!
4. I know you will know the results by the time you tead this, but you may just have the antibodies and not the active virus. Something like 20% fight if off themselves!
5. Being young may help you get treatment that an old lady like me might not be a candidate for. Try to be happy and not let it destroy your happiness! Enjoy that little girl! They don't stay little forever. I loved being a mommy! Focus on happy, it helps!
