Stigma of HCV in Dr. ?

gimpyD posted:
I finally got the nerve up to do the whole range of tests, went to the "specialist" who was awful. He doesn't specialize in Hep, he "has a person who deals with those people" and sends in a lady. She was nice, but I was in tears by then. I'd been to a naturopath who has a Ph. D, and Hep C himself. He has medicine made just for him by a FDA approved lab. He's still working and looking healthy. He said the regular Dr. just want to sell me their drug, and the specialist said the same thing about the naturopath. All I know is he treated me like a person where the "real Dr." treated me like trash. The person who deals with people like me said she could get me in a study if I have type 1, which it turns out I do, but I haven't heard from anybody, and a friend of mine who is taking this "new combination" says it has made her so sick she's not sure she can make it through. By the way, look up Naringin. It may be the new drug we're looking for if it can be made into an IV or shot. It's not absorbed well as capsules, which is how it comes now. So...what to do? Stick with Naturopath who kept himself alive and has many patients, or "modern medicine" with a mean Doctor? I did expect stigma, but not from a doctor! I was born with a birth defect and have had many surgeries and transfusions in the 60's and 70's. He acts like it's my own fault. No, he just acts like he can't stand the sight of me. He's no prize himself btw. What do you think?

So sorry to hear you've had such a traumatic journey. I tried a few and researched MANY 'natural cures' before finally starting treatment in March. Just a couple of things to keep in mind:
1. The naturopath's treatment is 'for sale' also...
2. The pegasys / ribavirin has history behind it.
Either way, get a different MD. I wouldn't want to visit 'one of those people' like him. Best of luck.

Thanks hawgfan...Go Hawgs! The "nice lady" who said if I said if I had type 1 she would get me in a study so I could get the medicine. None of it is in my formulary. I havn't heard a word. Is it because they "fast-tracked" it? How can I possibly get the three med treatment now? Even the Hepatologist said Milk Thistle might be ok. Better than nothing, I guess. I was looking for a hepatologyst when I found out the guy who had me in tears is one. Wow. I've known for years I had this and just got up the nerve to have all the tests done. I really wish I hadn't now. I was way better off without the stigma.

How 'bout them Hawgs! You might want to check back with the lady at the doc's office to see where that stands. Milk Thistle is good for the liver but won't cure hep c. You might also want to consider another hepatologist / gastro doc. Believe me, the stigma is with them, not you. There are thousands of people with hep c who got it through transfusions, tattoos, etc, not through iv drug use, like I got it Hang in there and I will keep you in my prayers.
