My boyfriend of the past 5 years just found out that he is Hepatitis C positive. He has been, unfortunately, an alcoholic for many, many years. He has no idea about how he could have caught it. We are both pretty non-informed about what it is. I've been doing some research on the internet and have become really freaked out that I may have it. How possible is it to transmit? I heard that through sex or through blood is the way. Well, we've had unprotected sex....that's it. I put a call into my doctor asking if I should get tested. She hasn't returned my call yet and I am completely a nervous wreck. I recently had weight loss surgery and am trying to better my life. A hep C diagnosis would just not make my day!

Sorry no one has responded to you. First things first, Hep C is a blood born disease only. For your boyfriend, he needs to stop drinking. Not that the drinking will make the hep C worse, but it will hurt the liver and the liver is what is damaged by the Hep C virus. Do you know what his genotype is? If he really wants to try and fight and can't stop drinking on his own, maybe AA. As far as you are concern, absolutely get tested. If for nothing else, a piece of mind. If your doctor won't test you, there are home testing kits that you can purchase on line. I personally have tested hundreds using these and they are quite accurate. If you are negative, you just need to be conscience about your boyfriends blood. Don't use his tooth brush, if he cuts himself protect yourself from his blood. If you are positive, (ask the doctor what your genotype is) then you need to find a knowledgeable gastroenterologist or heptologist who deals with Hep C patients. A less harsher treatment is on the horizon and I think will be ready in 2015. I got Hep C from a life saving blood transfusion. I have been through 2 rounds of treatment and have 1 week left of my third go around

I had an appointment with my liver specialist, yesterday. Apparently I have Type 1A.....which she said is harder to cure. Anyone know about 1A? She said that there is treatment that last 3 months, but I need an injectable treatment.......or something like that. She said the treatment makes you constantly feel like you have the flu and causes severe depression/ suicidal tendencies. Any comments on this?

PERHAPS YOU NEED TO FIND A DIFFERENT MD. YES IT CAN DO ALL THAT BUT WITH A GOOD MD THEY WILL WALK THIS PATH WITH YOU ALWAYS. ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS CAN BE TAKEN CARE OF WITH SOME MEDS.
