SSRI antidepressants and elevations in liver function tests

Is there a relationship between SSri antidepressant medications and elevations in SGPT and Sgot blood tests? Oddly enough my sister also has benign thyroid nodules that increase in size when on these antidepressants. Is there another safer form of antidepressants that treat depression and not effect LFTests? Her GGT was 278 and Sgot was 200. Thanks

could find no direct relationship between ssri and elevated liver enzymes - tricyclic anti ds can directly raise enzymes --- there may be an indirect relationship - sgpt is primarily a liver damage indicator - elevated sgot and ggt can caused by many things other than liver

Melissa Palmer, MD responded:
While SSRIs are considered to be safe for people with liver disease, they can increase liver-related blood tests. However, other causes of liver elevations need to be looked for as the SSRI may or may not be the cause, for example, thyroid disease can also sometimes cause elevations in liver enzymes.

Thank You so much for taking the time out of your very busy schedule to reply to my post. We finally found an MD at UAMS in Little Rock, Arkansas, J.Tyler Baber who is listed as a Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist that is in my sisters' insurance network, after much searching. My sisters' fear is very great as we lost our mom 7 years ago to cirrhosis due to NASH which wasn't diagnosed until very late in the game.
I appreciate you so much. I ordered your book via Amazon.com which I should recieve Monday. I will keep you posted on diagnosis, thanks for your valuable insight as well. Respectfully, Laurie Bauer
