my husband just tested hep c positive. i am scared i just got tested yesterday but still don't know the results. i have a 5 yr old and 6 week old baby. i'm really scared because the doctor said if i have it i have to get my children checked. i was wondering how likely it is to get hep c sexually and do both people have to be bleeding to pass it to one or the other. my husband used drugs before i met him and we think that is how he got it. we have been together almost 7 yrs.

hep c can only be transmitted through active blood transmission -so yes both have to be bleeding - its very unlikely to transmit sexually - personally i wouldnt worry - its also very rarely transmitted through childbirth - but getting checked doesnt hurt

Precisely. Transmission rate for open sores is amazingly low. I choose not to repeat what the specialist at Duke Uni Hosp. shared with me because it would only lead to lowering of one's guard. The other tidbit of info I was given was, the virus can only survive about a week outside host blood.

I still find myself ever cautious about sharing blades and toothbrush. My toothbrush stays in a container glass containing hydrogen peroxide and is put up. I even go to the lengths of keeping my own tooth paste.

Always get checked when unsure of exposure, it'll save you the worry. :)

under normal conditions the virus cant survive much more than 1 day outside the body - under certain unlikely conditions it can survive months
