How often should a biopsy be done?
RRichard2005 posted:
Last one was 2006. Since then I did almost 48 weeks of tx (relapsed while on tx), got pregnant and kinda ignored my HCV and starting drinking socially again. I have been feeling fine so I suspect my liver to be OK, except for the drinking on and off. I was stage 1 in 2006.

I think I had an epiphany.. I have stopped drinking about a week ago and I am ready to beat this dragon! I am going to a specialist soon and am ready to try treatment again!
Melissa Palmer, MD responded:
A liver biopsy typically is done every 5 years but there are depending upon many factors, such as initial stage of disease, motivation to be treated, genotype, other medical conditions etc

Hello, I have been dealing with autoimmune hepatitis since 2006...I'm 25 and it has been quite a journey living with this disease and other medical issues. I am on 50 mg of immuran and have been on it since 2007...I started on prednisone first for a year and a half and then was tapered off while starting the immuran ...I have only had one biopsy done and that was in 2006 around November when I was first diagnosed...I'm stable now but should I still get another biopsy? Before when I was going through tons of tests before the doctors figured it out my blood tests would be good and bad...I could be feeling horrible and the tests would come back good and at other times I would be feeling great but the tests would come back bad so I just want to make sure I'm covering all my bases...unfortunately I'm only seeing my primary care doctor...I live in hawaii and the GI doctors are scarce. Before I saw a GI doctor in other states because my dad was in the military. it ok that I take advil? I have other meds I take too and just recently I thought I would try it since I know Tylenol isn't that great for me and I was taking it a lot before...if you could please answer these questions I would truly appreciate it...I have never written on a forum before so this is new for me...thanks again!
Melissa Palmer, MD replied to kansha25's response:
Tylenol in moderation is safe for the liver - make sure that you take less than 2 grams/day. Typically advil not advised in advance stages of liver disease or if you have kidney problems.
There are liver specialists in hawaii - your primary doctor should refer you for further evaluation. Whether or not you need a repeat biopsy depends on numerous factors.
kansha25 replied to Melissa Palmer, MD's response:
Thanks for the help! I appreciate it!
