I found out today that a partner I was with about 5 years ago had HIV. I have not known of any symptoms if I have had any, thus no testing or treatments. Could I have HIV and not know it?

Yes, it is possible to have HIV and now know it. Except for a short term bout of flu like symptoms shortly after transmission, HIV has no symptoms for many years.

It is not until the disease has progressed from HIV to AIDS (the last stage of the disease) that many begin to experience serious symptoms. As a general rule, this takes about a decade to occur in an untreated individual.

If you remain concerned, consider getting a screening test; there are tests that provide results within 20 minutes.
