High Blood Pressure

My roomate is a 56 year old male and his blood pressure is 170/130. Just how bad is this & which number is most critical?
Haylen_WebMD_Staff responded:
With those numbers, he has high blood pressure and is at risk for health complications. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke - read all about symptoms, treatment and management here: WebMD Hypertension & High Blood Pressure Community.

Systolic is the top number and diastolic is the bottom number. A normal systolic blood pressure is below 120.
A systolic blood pressure number of 140 or higher is considered to be hypertension, or high blood pressure.

The diastolic blood pressure number or the bottom number indicates the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats. A diastolic blood pressure number of 90 or higher is considered to be hypertension or high blood pressure.

Has your roommate had a physical exam and discussed his numbers with a doctor? I would encourage him to address his high blood pressure ASAP.

Blood pressure that high is classified as a hypertensive Urgency.

And it can cause damage to organs and become an Emergency.

He needs to be seen by a doctor ASAP.
