High Blood Pressure for the first time

I'm very surprised by my blood pressure results from a biometric screening last week. Is it possible that the environment around me (stressful situation, hunger due to fasting, withdrawal from coffee) could have led to higher blood pressure results? Hypertension does run in my family. BUT I'm trying to figure out if I should get a second opinion on the blood pressure since it has never been high before.

Yes, stress, anxiety, dehydration, pain, and many other things can affect blood pressure.

The standard to define hypertension is to for it to be high at 2 separate times.

In the UK they use an ambulatory, 24 hr blood press test to help eliminate temporary causes for high blood pressure.

I agree with billH99. You should monitor your pressure over the course of a month to get a better idea. Take your pressure three or four times daily and keep a log of the readings. Use the free online blood pressure log at http://www.bpchronicle.com to keep track. If you are fasting this should actully improve your blood pressure (that is unless the fasting itself is stressing you out). In the act of fasting you cutting salt and sugar intake two things that skyrocket blood pressure. In fact there is a method of lowering blood pressure that involves fasting but it is done under a doctors care. I don't recommend fasting without supervision. It is better to just eat right. Stay Low
