When the nurse comes near me wth the blood pressure cuff, I can feel myself get very anxious and I know my pressure is rising, they say this is white coat syndrome, any suggestions?

One protocol is to have you sit is a quiet room for 5 minutes and then use an automatic machine that will take 5 readings in 5 minutes and then average the middle 3.

Another is to use a 24 hr ambulatory monitor. That is a small wearable automatic machine that take BP ever 10 - 15 minutes. The British are now using that as their standard way of defining hypertension as the BP can fluctuate over the day for a number of reason.

But even if you BP is otherwise normal spikes are still a risk factor.

And there are probably other times when it spikes due to anxiety.

Exercise helps both lower BP and reduce anxiety. Specially outdoors in natural areas (parks, nature trails).

And there are a number of relaxation methods that help lower anxiety. The book The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson is a good place to start.

Be sure that you're talking to your doctor about your blood pressure, regardless of the reason it seems to be spiking.
